History of PBC
It is not without trying but we have been unable to determine the exact date the club was first created. Most other clubs in the area date their creation back to the Armouries in their town. The Peterborough Armouries was completed in the year 1909 and housed the Hasting Prince Edward Regiment and most likely the Peterborough Artillery Badminton Club. It is our assumption that the club has existed since 1909 (in some capacity) and may have had a few disruptions for World War I and the Spanish flu outbreak.
However, mid-way through the 1920s, the club was strong enough to maintain steady membership and an internal competitive championship each year. The very first recorded piece of club history we have are two singles trophies from the year 1929 - they are the Artillery Badminton Club Ladies Singles Trophy presented by Lt. Col. D.J Lawrie and the Men's Singles Trophy presented by Major F. Hills. In the 1930s, the Berger Tailoring Co. Trophy for Mixed Doubles was donated by the Selkirk Men's Shop. These trophies have been awarded every year since, except for two breaks for World War II and most recently COVID-19.
In 1956, the club moved on from its artillery beginnings and officially became the Peterborough Badminton Club, a fully incorporated public entity. In that same year, you will be able to see two doubles trophies donated by Fraser Bowen Jewellers and maintained ever since. The club continued to play at the Armouries offering a junior program at that location well into the 1980s. They played at the top of the Peterborough Landmark in Markethall with wood-fired stoves between courts. The adult program played out of Trent University's Athletic complex from the 1970s to 2020. The club now plays out of local Peterborough high schools, Thomas A Stewart and Crestwood.
Currently, the club welcomes 150 adult athletes and 90 junior athletes to our programs and we have a healthy waitlist at all times. As one of Ontario's largest public badminton clubs, we are excited to welcome all ages from 8 to 94, ranging of skill levels from beginner to competitive. We are proud to provide a diverse and welcoming atmosphere where all members feel welcome.
We strive to be not just a club but a community.
